I DON’T UNDERSTAND

I Don’t Understand is a continuation of Karolina Breguła’s reflection on the reception of contemporary art, which is considered by many to be incomprehensible and often causes confusion among viewers, ultimately leading to aversion. In the video, the artist assumes the roles of people voicing their opinions and impressions after visiting art galleries and museums. All the statements originate from interviews conducted by Breguła during her work on 66 Conversations about Contemporary Art (2007) and in the following years. The artist plays the role of her interlocutors in order to, as she explains, ‘show that, although we [contemporary art professionals] are reluctant to admit it, most of us are no strangers to the confusion, reluctance or naive admiration felt by non-professional art audiences.’
