VIDEO CAMERA
video-performance, 26’36’’
2007

A performance for camera in which Karolina Breguła recites a video camera manual in various European languages, and illustrating the text with repetitive conventionalised and hilarious movements akin to the gestures of a flight attendant. Video Camera is a humorous statement concerning language as an imperfect form of communication. Tapping into the medium of film, Breguła proves the superiority of gestures over spoken national languages. The work depicts video as a carrier whose documentary and pictorial character makes it comprehensible regardless of language differences. In this formal statement investigating the medium, which betrays the influence of Józef Robakowski, the artist is the subject and the object of the artistic operation at the same time, akin to video itself, which is both the instrument and the object of analysis.
